A tenth anniversary doesn't come around for a lot of bands, so we are extremely thankful to all of you, the coolest Soulmates on the planet.

To show our thanks, we're throwing a HUGE PARTY at 1pm on April 30 at Durty Nellie's (just about a week away)!!

Well, it's more like an amped up show. Boy, the fabulous sound and lights by GR8 Soundsz Audio had us poppin! We also have to shout out the Tailgaters manager, John Totura, and the amazing service staff. They worked their tails off to keep the drinks and food fresh and plentiful!

If you haven't already, check out our photo album from the night. Tag yourself, tag your friends, share, like, laugh, or comment. We love to hear from you!

We have a few notable takeaways... First, the GR8 Soundsz Audio team posted some live video of us on the Bar Bands page:

Tush (featuring amazing solos by Dave on keys and Chris on lead guitar)

Rocky Mountain Way

Carry On Wayward Son

The next morning, we got a nod from Dag and Di on their Morning Coffee Dag Show (spoiler: they loved us!).

Another notable takeaway is that no one took home the secret code word giveaway. The only place to get the secret code word is in our “Sound Off” email newsletter. So, don't miss another chance… Sign up today!

Finally, a huge shout out to our Soulmates, new and old… the love vibe in the room was palpable, and that's what puts the “live” in LIVE music. So, even though we didn't have a secret code word winner, the cheeseball in me says we all walked away “winners” on Saturday. Amiright?

Thanks again for having us, Tailgaters. Let's rock again soon!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/71629982023-03-01T11:09:06-06:002023-03-02T12:14:24-06:00Sound Off Review: MT Barrels of Schaumburg
Seven Soul has had the pleasure of playing MT Barrels many times over the years, and our latest show didn't disappoint. Great stage and lighting. Although we were disappointed that they took the peninsula off the front of the stage, the plus side is that the dance floor is bigger! Bathrooms at each end of the venue are clean.

Shoutouts

FOOD: Above average food quality and lots of choices! We usually get some noshes and quesadilla. Yummy!

SOUND: Michael Alioto of SoundzGood2Me Music runs production. Michael is simply one of the best sound engineers around. Attentive and engaged, he takes the time to make sure your band sounds as good as it possibly can. We love him!

SERVICE: Kimm Dassi, the server manager. Who doesn't love Kimm? No one we have ever met, that's for sure. She's always on the lookout for empty glasses or empty plates and keeps your drinks full and your table clean. She's a great asset to MT Barrels!

PARKING: HUGE parking lot with free parking.

Band Notes

Dedicated door at side of stage for loading in/out with an area to store and stage your gear. Definitely one of the easiest places for load-in. The stage handles our 7-piece band comfortably, so you should have no issues.

Contacts & Location

We'd be stupid to pass up an amazing opportunity to double up on female voices!

First, the ladies from Seven Soul joined the Bottomz Up ladies for a powerful rendition of Journey's “Separate Ways.” Later that evening, we swapped. The Bottomz Up ladies joined us for REO Speedwagon's “Roll with the Changes.” Harmony heaven!

Other than the amazing tunes, we did get a chance to celebrate a couple of Soulmates:

First, Rich presented super-Soulmate Shelly with a Seven Soul pillow, featuring a nostalgic collage of Seven Soul member performances.

But, good or bad, change brings opportunity. And, we're taking this opportunity to turn our lemons into lemon drops!

For one, our lineup changed... again. It's never easy to say goodbye to a bandmate, but for every goodbye there's a welcome. This time, we're welcoming our new guitarist, Chris Costis.

Chris's guitar style comes from a wide swath of influences, ranging from Zappa to Rush and Robert Johnson to Reel Big Fish. You'll love how he injects his high energy style and creativity into every performance.

Second, we're focused. Seven Soul had an identify crisis in the past... a little rock, a little soul, and little country. Now, we're strictly rock. Especially, amazing arena rock from the 70s to 90s. Trust me, everyone loves our new song choices!

Finally, speaking of songs, we're committed to new. You're going to hear something new at every performance, so prepare to be wowed.

We all know, disruption isn't easy. But, maybe it was exactly the kick we needed to retool and come back stronger than ever. This is our new normal.

But, don't take our word for it. Check out our next show, then leave a comment here telling us what you think!

See you soon, Soulmates!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/66789772021-07-04T22:56:20-05:002023-04-29T00:40:20-05:007.4.2021: What Doesn't Kill You...
Let's face it, last year was brutal.

So much has changed, so much was lost. For the music scene, we watched helplessly while countless venues and bands caved. And I won't lie, I was worried that we might be one of them.

But... we weren't.

We survived, but not without some changes to announce. First, we have a lineup change... sadly, Rob "Warzone" Wawrzyniak has decided to step back from the stage. With a heavy heart, we bid him adieu and wish him all the best in his future pursuits.

That leaves an empty spot on the stage. I'm happy to say that we're filling it with not just one, but two amazing guitarists. With pleasure, I would like to introduce you to our newest members, Virgil Neace and Vic Perrino!

Virgil Neace is no stranger to the Chicago music scene, and you might live under a rock if you're not familiar with one of his most notable projects, Hi-Infidelity. Not only was he a founding member, but he rocked many stages with this top-notch band for more than 25 years! Now, he's excited to come out of retirement and rock hard with Seven Soul.

Vic Perrino is another amazing guitarist who knows his way around a fret board. He's also a long-time veteran of the music scene, rocking all of the biggest stages and venues across the tri-state area. Vic is a guitar chameleon, mastering a wide swath of styles. But, he's ready to bring his best rock styles to the stage with the other members of Seven Soul.

Second announcement... we are RETURNING TO THE STAGE!

After a year of waiting, you can experience the newest Seven Soul (with eight members, ha!) at MT Barrels on Saturday, July 17 @ 8 pm.

See you there, Soulmates!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/62107932020-02-10T17:30:00-06:002023-04-29T00:40:46-05:002.10.2020: Rolling with the Changes
When something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

And, a unicorn who plays keys, well… I suppose it was. Although we loved jamming with Tony, he decided to move on, and we wish him nothing but the best!

So, where does that leave the musicians of Seven Soul? Hungry for another helping of keys… And, we found it. We are very pleased to announce our newest member, Dave Farquhar!

Dave comes from a family of talented musicians, and he currently spends his days surrounded by the smiling faces and eager music creations of his young orchestra students. But now, he’s going to spend more time with adults, adding a dose of Seven Soul rock into his musical life.

Orchestra teacher by day, rock star by night… that’s just how Dave rolls.

Come see his transformation for yourself! Dave debuts with Seven Soul at Ballydoyle-Aurora on Friday, February 28.

See you there, Soulmates!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/58371762019-07-25T21:40:15-05:002023-04-29T00:41:07-05:007.26.2019: The Unicorn Hunt is Over
All it takes is first grade math to know that Seven Soul hasn't been exactly accurate, as of late. With only six members on recent stages, what's the deal with the extra soul?

We finally have the answer...

Please, give a warm Soulmate welcome to our newest member, Tony "the Unicorn" Keys! That's right, he's one of those rare breeds that plays keyboard and guitar, and we can't wait to unleash his talents on you.

Long ago, Tony’s mother urged him to take music lessons, predicting “Someday you’ll thank me for this!” Dutifully, Tony followed his family’s musical footsteps and started music lessons at age 9. Although his early lessons were rooted in Classical, his 12-year-old heart turned to Rock when he and his buddies started their first garage band. His early musical influences included British Invasion and American 60-70's rock, such as the Beatles, Stones, Procol Harum, Doors, and the Allman Bros. Since then, Tony has played venues far and wide, from Manchester England to BB King's Blues Club in Los Angeles.

More recently in Chicago, Tony has played with Alter Ego, Double D and the Sensations, 8trak, and 45 RPM. But now, he's happy to join forces with Seven Soul! Next time you see him, listen very carefully—through gritted teeth, you'll hear him whisper, "You were right, Mom."

We already feel his influence in rehearsals, and your first chance to hear for yourself is our next show:

Although his stay with us was short, we are very sad to say that guitarist Ed Michener is moving on. Family always comes first, and we fully support Ed and his decision to spend more time guiding his mini-human to stellar adult status.

Filling Ed’s shoes was not easy, but the stars and planets aligned just right for this one. We are pleased as all get-out to announce our newest member of the Seven Soul family… guitarist Rob “Warzone” Wawrzyniak!

Rob is a longtime Chicagoland rocker. In the early years, the “older guys” around Chicago took a liking to young Rob and developed his deep love for the soulful guitar music of the 70's. They also filled his head with romanticized stories of the rock legends who conjured that wondrous music, driving him to his primary goal… become a rock star!

Rob spent many years on the local music scene, most recently as guitarist for Missbehavin’ and Buckshot Bully. But when he puts the guitar down, Rob loves spending time with his beloved wife and two pups (Harley and Davey), burning miles of back roads on his Harley!

Rob brings a distinctly unique sound to Seven Soul, and you don’t have to wait long to hear it. Come see Rob’s debut as we open for the unparalleled Hairbanger’s Ball!

Well, the time has come for us to stir the Seven Soul pot and retool.

To that end, three of our members are moving on: Frances Giagkou, Steve Mateja, and Pete Misic... you are all top-notch musicians, and it has been our privilege and honor to share the stage with each of you over the years. We enjoyed every minute, and we wish you great luck in your future musical journeys!

It's never easy to fill the shoes of our departing members. However, we're very happy to announce the arrival of these two accomplished musicians:

Ed Michener • Guitar

Southsider Ed joins our strings section, applying his signature tone to Seven Soul's variety of covers. Ed grew up frequenting infamous southside blues haunts, eventually playing in cover bands throughout Chicagoland. You may have seen him hit the stage with his most recent band, the 90's/00's alt rock cover band, Tequila Mockingbird.

Scott Studinger • Bass

Scott comes off as an unassuming, somewhat shy and nerdy nice guy. But, don't be fooled... Scott is a bass BEAST! Music is Scott's passion. You'd never know, but Scott didn't pick up a bass until college! Thirty years later, Scott is still learning and mastering his bass, influenced by musical giants Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, Geezer Butler, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, and Steve Harris.

Ed and Scott both bring their own brand of awesome to Seven Soul, and you are invited to experience our new lineup, with a (mostly) new set list, at their first show—Come show them some Soulmate love!

Once again, we found ourselves short one voice. After an extensive search, the only one who made the cut was Kat Johnson (2016-2017). She enthusiastically jumped in to complete the Seven Soul lineup, and gave us everything she had. Her positive attitude and love of music brought out our best, and we're so pleased she's reuniting with us at our anniversary show, Seven Soul celebrates 5 Years at Q Bar | Glendale Heights!
And, that concludes our roundup of Seven Soul past members. Be sure to join us on April 27 for this special "Seven Soul family" reunion and celebration of our past members. But, we're also celebrating our present lineup, which is poised to rock us into the future. It's going to be an extra special night of fun and feels... be there!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/51825602018-04-20T11:00:00-05:002023-04-29T00:42:44-05:00Alumni Spotlight: Mike Sweeney
As we lead up to our 5 YEARS OF ROCK anniversary show, we'd like to remember the many alumni who got us here...

Michael S. Sweeney (2015) came on board when we suddenly found ourselves without a drummer. Although he was with us only a short time, we do appreciate his dedication and hard work to keep us in sync (no easy task) and moving forward! Michael, like all of our past alumni, has been part of an important thread that got us to where we are today, and we're truly thankful. We couldn't have made it this far without all of you, and we really don't want you to miss your party!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/48144212017-08-15T00:59:01-05:002018-02-24T23:01:11-06:0008.14.2017: Seven Soul, version 4.5
Benjamin Franklin once said, "When you're finished changing, you're finished." On that note, I'm happy to report that Seven Soul is not finished!

As you may have guessed, we have some changes to report... we're very sad to say that two of our loved members have moved on. First, our drummer Tim, who was already stretched thin, jumped on an opportunity he just couldn't refuse. Second, our beloved Kat has also moved on. Although she loves the stage, entertaining, and especially singing, the time was right to switch her musical gears. We wish both of them great success pursuing their passions!

What now? Are we changing our name to "Five Soul"? Umm, no. We are moving on to SEVEN SOUL version 4.5! Introducing...

Jim Mathews can now be found banging out the beats behind the drums. From the time he was just a young tyke, listening (with a tear in his eye) to the high school band play the Hawaii Five-O theme, he was hooked. He's been playing in successful bands ever since, and we're thrilled to have him join the Seven Soul team! But, that's not all...

Britt Slayton is a stellar new vocalist joining the ranks! Britt will be joining the ladies up front as they belt out rock hits like you've never heard before! Britt tackles powerful songs with a gritty, unhinged style that is new to Seven Soul, and you're sure to love it as much as we do!

The new Seven Soul 4.5 lineup takes the stage for the first time next weekend at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. You do not want to miss this!

Road trip, anyone? ;-)
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/43157182016-08-08T19:02:05-05:002021-07-04T20:04:34-05:008.8.2016: Aloha!
No, Seven Soul is not planning a show in Hawaii (we WISH!). "Aloha" is just one of those mixed up words that means both "hello" and "goodbye." And, that's exactly where we find ourselves right now...

First, Melissa Moulden has landed some new opportunities in the local music world, which is great news! However, there are only so many hours in the day, so the sad result is that she is retiring from Seven Soul. She was one of the beautiful voices on stage with us for the past year and a half, and she will certainly be missed. But, don't worry, you can still hear her gorgeous voice around Chicagoland! Melissa has several vocal projects around town, including the U.F.C. Band, the Andrew Blake Band, and more. We wish Melissa great success in her newest endeavors!

Filling the vacancy in our lineup, we are incredibly pleased to welcome the uncomparable Kat Johnson! Kat has a long, successful history in the local and international music scene, including Think Floyd and the Trans Infinity Orchestra. She not only brings her vocal talent to Seven Soul, but she is also skilled with an acoustic 6-string, bass, and violin (classically trained!).

Of course, any change in our lineup inevitably results in changes to our catalog. Seven Soul is working intently on updating our set lists to take full advantage of our collective musical talents and to maximize YOUR enjoyment!

Be sure to catch us at an upcoming show to see what's new and different. Plus, be sure to say hello to Kat... I promise, she doesn't bite (...hard)! Ha!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/37786342015-07-15T11:21:20-05:002018-04-03T12:31:53-05:007.11.2015: To Infinity, And Beyond!
If last weekend is any indication, Buzz Lightyear's got nothing on Seven Soul!

We were honored to make our inaugural appearance at the Glendale Heights Fest this summer, playing just before the beloved headliner, Infinity.
At first, the rain threatened to spoil the night for the good people of Glendale Heights (except for a few diehard troopers who were armed with giant golf umbrellas! Good thinking!). But, the clouds eventually parted, and the people started gathering for a great night of music.

Now, I'd love to say that they came to see us, but that wouldn't be entirely true. We did have bonafide SoulMates in the audience (we <3 you Mindy!), and we can't thank them enough for showing their support! Several festival goers wandered over from the carnival rides when the Seven Soul tunes reached them. But, the bulk of the audience were Infinity fans who arrived early to stake out a premo spot for the show. By the second half of our set, we had a great turnout!

No matter who they came to see, the crowd got a full taste of Seven Soul... and, they really dug us! Young and old, we saw dancing, grooving, head-bopping, and lip-syncing from every angle. Glendale Heights rocks!

Sadly, we ended our set a song early to keep the show running on time. Eh, it happens. But, Bob Biagi from Infinity made up for it. Whaaaaa??? Yep, he invited the Seven Soul ladies to sing a song with them. What a generous offer and honor to perform with these guys! (Thanks, Bob!)

So in the end, we had a BLAST performing and celebrating summer with the people of Glendale Heights. Thanks so much for having us, and let's do it again!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/37704772015-07-08T15:02:49-05:002018-04-23T02:35:15-05:007.4.2015: Ahhhh... Independence
Gotta hand it to Mom... just when you think our non-summer is going to spoil our fun, Mother Nature delivers a perfectly gorgeous day for the 4th. We had those, too... 360 degrees of them! Spectacular!

The ladies of Seven Soul delivered some sizzling dance and rock tunes that got the crowd up on their feet right away. From the very first note of "Fat Bottom Girls" to the lasting ring of "Lady Marmalade," we spent an hour getting to know and party alongside our newest SoulMates. After that, we handed the stage reins to our good friends from Veilside, and they rocked the island until the wee hours.

Thanks to Blarney Island, United Talent, and the Chicago Rocker for having us out this year! Tim McCarthy is once again filling the drummer role and sitting high upon the drummer's throne (you know the crown and scepter can't be too far behind, right?).

With his return, Tim brings all of his previous knowledge of Seven Soul's musical catalog, so he'll be able to hit the ground running. Plus, he's bringing his special talent for keeping us all on our toes and producing a polished product in the end.

Finally, we are also pleased to have yet another drummer on deck. You may have seen Don Pokorny of Whiskey Road playing with us from time to time. Well, Don is officially a pinch-hitter for Seven Soul, which means we can keep doing what we love... playing awesome music for all of YOU.

So, don't be a stranger... be a SoulMate and come on out to hear Tim and the rest of us rock your favorite tunes, Seven Soul style!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/36927152015-05-05T15:45:31-05:002017-08-15T22:06:54-05:005.4.2015: Once in a Blue Moon
It isn't every day that you get to participate in a game changer. No, you're not crazy... the name is similar to the famous SXSW Music Fest. By design. Like the famous fest, the NXNW Highway Fest featured gobs of music from multiple genres, all within a short walk. Think "3-day musical pub crawl."

We were one of 45 band playing across those 4 venues in Edison Park. And, I gotta say, kuddos to the brain child of this one! Put that on your bucket list pronto!

It just can't be said enough... THANK YOU to all of our SoulMates for your love and support! We had some familiar faces in the crowd at Shark City, such as Laura and Mike (of The Ralleys)... thanks for monkey-sitting Spanky for us! And, of course, the aforementioned Terry Murphy of Rock Heart Photography was there to capture the night's energy in gorgeous stills. We were even honored with a Tony Shark-Labarbera sighting! One of the best compliments for any band has to be when other musicians come out to see us on their night off. So, hats off to Buddy and Bart of Hinge and the numerous other musicians in the room. You guys ROCK!

Just judging from the fun in the room and on the dance floor, I'm guessing we gained a few new friends by night's end, too (welcome to our cozy corner of the rockin' world!).

Now, Seven Soul is taking a nice long break between shows. However, that doesn't mean we're sitting idly by. Oh no! We'll be busting our butts, working on new material—we have new voices, so we need new songs to match, right? We'll also be back in the studio, spiffing up our promo materials. Plus, we're breaking in a fourth voice, but we'll chat more about that later.

Thanks again for the support, and we hope to see YOU on the dance floor with us someday soon!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/31621412014-08-29T11:29:40-05:002017-08-15T22:09:18-05:0008.29.2014: SEVEN SOUL WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS!
Our singer search is over!

We are extremely pleased to welcome the newest members of Seven Soul... Frances Giagkou and Melissa Moulden.

Frances (a.k.a., "Frankie," "Francois," "Frannie," "F-BOMB," and "Hey You") comes to us from the distant shores of Greece, Germany, Holland, and the not so distant Texas, Florida, Georgia, and New York. All of that travel left an indelible impression on her diverse musical taste. And, she is no stranger to the stage either. Some of her past projects include alterna-rock's Ballistic Edna, punk’s ZTA VRQS, indie rock’s Aquavit, acoustic’s Twinlights, and most recently pop-rock's Rock Recycler.

Frankie has a unique style and powerful vocal delivery that is sure to wow our SoulMates! Her vocal career began as a child, singing along to her mom and dad's oldies and show tunes. But, her musical experience vastly broadened later with her background in traditional choir, musical theater, and a cappella singing. Melissa credits many powerful female vocalists as her influences and inspiration (Tori Amos, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Sarah McLachlan to name just a few!). So, it's no wonder she brings a vivid vocal versatility to Seven Soul.

Not only does Melissa have a WOW FACTOR voice, but she is right at home on stage. Melissa has sung with a few cover bands in the past, and she is currently also a singer with U.F.C. Band. Plus, she is a member and co-director of a Chicago-based a cappella group called Lake Shore Jive... have I mentioned that she really loves music?

Finally, it's happening.

A year ago, Seven Soul sat down to plan our goals. We had two: casinos and festivals. As of last weekend...

DONE.

Can someone just pinch me? I still can't believe the whirlwind, and I lived it. The weekend started with a road trip to Springfield, IL. We played to the bustling Friday lunch crowd at the Illinois State Fair. Yes, the STATE FAIR. Everyone dug it, even when we invited our daughters on stage for "Nothing But a Good Time" (yeah, no shy children for us). Surely, it was the highlight of their little entertaining souls!

Several newbie SoulMates congratulated us on a job well done. The guitarist in a later band admitted, "I'm sure glad we aren't following you guys!" Even our sound guy thanked us profusely (no kidding!) and said it was "an honor" to have us on his stage. WOW. But, the biggest thrill for me came hours later...as we strolled the festival grounds, patrons and employees alike gave us a big thumbs UP. Awww... shucks, y'all. See ya next year!

After the journey home Saturday afternoon, we headed over to Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin. Admittedly, we got off to a rocky start. Hey, it isn't easy preparing for a 3-hour show with two brand new fill-ins! But, our sound guy, Jesse (what a sweetie!), helped get us back on track for the last two sets. A hearty THANK YOU goes out to Sonya Schwanda (vocals) and Don Pokorny (drums) for lending us their talents for the night! And, another big shout-out goes to the amazing crowd that boogied and crooned right along. You rock!

As if that wasn't enough, we rounded out the ROCK STAR weekend with a show at the Edison Park Festival. We warmed up the crowd for the night's headliner, Two White Crew. What a PARTAY. The familiar faces in the crowd gave us the warm and fuzzies. And, I think we might have converted a few new faces into SoulMates. Thanks to all who came, and thanks to Edison Park for having us!

Even though we walked away from the weekend utterly exhausted, every last one of us had a huge SMILE smeared across our faces. Thanks. Just, thanks.

Were there some surprises? Are we hungry for more? ...Fuggedaboudit!

I won't lie. Now that we're working with some fill-in vocalists (albeit, hard-working and talented), you just never know what you're going to get. Good? Bad? Who knows!? So, I was a bit unnerved before taking the stage Friday night at Fitz's Spare Keys. Nope, we weren't perfect. Yep, we wish we could take back some sour notes and missed licks. But... all-in-all we put on one helluva show (and didn't bust any eardrum in the process this time)!

Plus, we're honored that Jim and Becky Obos from JPM Photography - Your Dreams Captured stopped by and snapped some ahhhhhh-MAZ-ing photos! They absolutely ROCK the camera, and they're just the best souls you'll ever meet. (Thanks, Jim and Becky!)

The following night, we had yet a different lineup, but still four (count 'em, FOUR) ladies mixing up the vocal magic. We played a full night at Goodfellas Bar and Grill in Cedar Lake, Indiana... our first time outside of Chicagoland! And, what a fun little place that was! We had no less than two birthdays and a wedding party drop in that evening. FUN!

Again, it wasn't a perfect night. But, we had the crowd up and dancing, singing along, tapping feet, and grinning from ear to ear throughout the night. Overwhelmingly, the feedback from the Goodfellas crowd tells us that they love the wide range and variety of music. You like the 80's hair band music? Great, but don't get too comfy... here's a 60's tune. Then, back to the 90's. Yeah, we definitely keep our audiences entertained and guessing!

What's next?

Obviously, we need to get our permanent lineup squared away. So, while we work on that, we're taking a little show break in July. Doesn't mean we aren't working! We have the Illinois State Fair and Edison Park Fest coming up quickly in August, so all eyes, fingers, voices, and attentions are tuned into those shows. We intend to summarily light those stages on fire, so stay tuned!

In closing, I have to once again thank our lovely and generous fill-in vocalists for all of their time and effort. Katy, Frankie, Melissa, and Julie... you're all dolls, and we can't thank you enough for bridging that gap to the new Seven Soul!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/30049772014-06-10T09:03:00-05:002017-08-15T22:10:55-05:0006.06.2014: With a Little Help from My Friends
"And, now for something completely different..."

You've heard it from Monty Python, and you've heard it many times from the Seven Soul stage. But when we say it this time, we really mean it. Our lineup looked very different, so (of course) our sound was equally just as different last Friday at Goose Island in Wrigleyville. However, one thing didn't change... that's right, the kick-ass ENERGY emanating from the ladies up front!

Until we find just the right voices for Seven Soul, two incredible singers/friends joined us for a great night of music! First, our good friend Frances Giagkou from Rock Recycler filled the stage with some Pat Benatar and Jefferson Airplane tunes. But what really brought the house down was her rendition of "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes. You know you're doing something right when the singer for the next band is seconds away from jumping on stage and crooning along with you. Nicely done, Frances!

Second, we had another friend, Julie Larson, jump up and round out our sound with some smooth harmonies. Then, she showed us what she can do with a little Janis Joplin ditty called "Me and Bobby McGee." You might have heard of it? ;-)

Our sincerest gratitude goes out to these lovely ladies for joining us and delivering a great show! The excitement and enthusiasm from the crowd reaffirms that we accomplished our mission—to deliver excellent music and a performance that keeps the crowd wanting even more Seven Soul!

Oh, but don't you worry your pretty heads... We're gearing up to keep bringing you our best at each and every show. Who will join us next? Just watch our calendar for announcements about all of the talented vocalists joining us next time for a unique musical experience you won't want to miss!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/29401492014-06-02T17:33:28-05:002017-08-15T22:11:44-05:0005.10.2014: Go West, Young Man!
They say life isn't about the destination... it's all in the journey. And, oh boy, what a journey it's been!

You probably know that the faces of Seven Soul are changing, which means that we've reached the end of journey number one. In reflection, I realize what a GREAT trip it's been! The paths of seven musicians collided in February 2013 (well, our drummer Tim came to the party a little later). Who knew that one year later, our completely unknown band would see our name on the marquees of some of the biggest venues in Chicagoland?

And sadly, who knew that our last show at Cairo Bar would be a swansong for two of those seven musicians? We had the honor of sharing the night with one of Chicago's finest bands, Mr. Blotto. Maybe they gained a few new fans from our SoulMates? I don't know, but I do know Seven Soul gained a few from their fan base (I'm talking to you, Dan, Steve, and Dale)! The energy was jumping, and we laid out our signature harmonies and tones in our truest Seven Soul style.

That show, and all of the shows that came before, are something to be proud of. And, we are. Immensely.

So, what's next for Seven Soul?

The show must go on.... and wheels are already in motion to find that next great lineup. Who's path is going to cross ours this time? We'll know soon enough. But until then, our musician friends are rallying behind Seven Soul to bridge the gap. Some great singers will join us on stage, bringing you unique performances you may never hear or see again!

We're also expanding our reach outside of Chicagoland. Already, we're crossing the state line into Indiana, and we'll announce some other shows in far-flung regions very soon. Watch for them!

I can't tell you how excited (and nervous, in a good way) I am to see where this leads. All indications point to an even more exciting year two for Seven Soul, and we can't wait to take this next journey with all of you!
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/29040962014-04-29T00:04:15-05:002017-08-15T22:11:58-05:0004.26.2014: CRUSHED IT. So, you are the one who didn’t hear that Seven Soul celebrated a huge milestone last weekend. We TURNED ONE. And, we celebrated BIG TIME, performing our hearts out on the Hard Rock Café stage in Chicago. Yeah, Baby!

But even before that, Seven Soul came full circle on Friday night, crushing MS alongside Cassi’s MS Crushing Crew! Plus, I think it’s no small coincidence that the Chicago Blackhawks won at the very moment we started our “hallelujah” crooning in Nothing But a Good Time. Yes, that’s right… we’re taking credit for the win. Ha!

Speaking of wins… Saturday? NAILED IT. First, the place was packed. Friends, family, strangers, and tourists from far and wide cheered, head-bobbed, and lip-synced alongside us. My expectations were already high, but they were blown away when uproarious cheers came from seemingly nowhere after the first few chords of I Love Rock n’ Roll! I guess those Japanese tourists in the balcony were huge Joan Jett fans?

And, I’m happy to report that not all eyes were dry in the house that night. We moved at least one super supportive SoulMate to tears by the end of our set. Awww… we’re pleased as punch that we did you proud, Sami!

As if Friday and Saturday weren’t enough, Seven Soul represented at Durty Nellies on Sunday for “Breaking the Silence 6.” This massive yearly event is hosted by our good friends in Veilside, and we’re proud to help kick autism’s ass in any small way we can. I'll never get tired of hearing different fans tell us at each successive show, "You seriously never sounded better!" I even heard a first-timer say, "You guys can do anything!" (quickly followed by, "Do you do any Eagles tunes?"). Ah, feel the love, feel the love.

After our set, we also had a little fun over at the bar with toys! No, not those kind. We had our now infamous button-wearing monkey with us, and he got to hang out with Chester (a big plastic T-Rex) and Winner-Winner-Chicken-Dinner (a rubber chicken). See, the things you miss when you don't come to the shows??? I won't spill ALL of their secrets, but they made quite the splash with friends and fans!

And, playing with kiddie toys wasn't the only resemblance to our preschool days that night. The band lineup was a little like that old Sesame Street game "one of these things is not like the other..." Seven Soul, a cover band, was paired with three other bands who played original jazz music only. There's no problem with that, except that our audiences were a little like oil and water.

So, I suppose this brings up a good question... what do the Chicagoland audiences prefer? On one hand, a cover band at least gives us an opportunity to hear music that is/was wildly popular (with good reason!). But, there's a very real risk of beating a poor dead horse of a song, and doing it not nearly as well as the original artist, right? Original music expands our horizons and introduces us to worlds we've never known. But, original bands sometimes don't have enough variety in their sound to keep the audience engaged for hours on end.

For me, the best is a mixture of old and new. It gives me a chance to enjoy the hits I love (hopefully in a new and interesting way) while I get familiar with the band's original work. If the band does it right, those original tunes soon become familiar. Slowly, they make their way into the list of songs I come back for again and again!

So, where do you weigh in?

No, not some roving circus act that drifted into town. Give up? The answer is none other than your favorite band of guys and gals, Seven Soul!

Last week, we brought our unique talent and biting humor to the WIIT 88.9 FM studio for the "Midday with K" show. Super fun! DJ Halfpint donned her journalism hat and asked about our humble beginnings, read fan questions and comments, and almost started a mini-battle for the "SoulMate Numero Uno" title (No worries, folks... there are plenty of regional titles to go around!). Before long, everyone was chatting (yeah, I know.. hard to imagine, right?), and before you know it, it's almost like we've teleported back to our rehearsal space in the basement.. let the sarcastic remark slinging begin! HA!

However, the best part of the interview had to be the three live acoustic numbers. We did an "unplugged" version of Fat-Bottom Girls (Queen), Hazy Shade of Winter (Bangles), and Paris (Grace Potter and the Nocturnals). Wow. Wait... let me rephrase that. WOW. Don't get me wrong, I really love the loud, rocking versions we do. But, just WOW to the crisp, clear harmonies and those acoustic beats from the guys. I get the feeling that's not the last time you'll hear some sweet, acoustic sounds from Seven Soul!

So, I don't know if it was the silly banter or the soulful songs, but we definitely caught the attention of at least a few listeners. First, some local WIIT listeners dropped by the studio about halfway through our segment to see us in person (thanks!). Later, we learned that we broke the record for the most live streams during the show... EVER. Nice, SoulMates! And, what's the biggest compliment any visitor can receive from a host? That's right... we were invited back. I guess the 'Midday with K" show and a couple of others show hosts like what they heard!

Not a bad way to spend rush hour on a Wednesday evening, eh?
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/25986942014-02-21T16:10:46-06:002017-08-15T22:13:16-05:0002.15.14: Tears for Hears
“Jaw-dropping!”

Many of you have asked, "So, how'd it go?" Short answer—AWESOME. Here's why...

First and foremost, we're professionals. That means, we stick to our commitments. I have to admit, when we found out we were scheduled in the 12:20 a.m. slot (yes, you read that right... A.M.), my thought was, "Why bother? Who's coming out to Chicago Ridge to see us start that late?!" But, Seven Soul made a commitment to participate, and we're not quitters. Besides, we couldn't let down the SoulMates who got us to this point in the competition! (We love you guys!!!)

Second, we DELIVERED. Yowza! As you were drifting off into a blissful slumber, you have no idea what musical
goodies you were missing! The show was running late, as is typical with these multi-band shows, so we didn't actually take the stage until about 1:00 a.m. (Ugh.). Didn't matter. The energy, the instruments, and the voices were there in full force. Boo-yah!

And thirdly, even with only about 7 people left in the audience (i.e., the bar staff and 3 friends), we got some terrific reviews! As our last note was still ringing into the room, one staffer (who dropped what he was doing and came to the front of the stage) said, "Now, THAT was entertaining!" The bartender later noted that Seven Soul really had only one other band that came close to competing with us. Not that anyone, other than those 7 people, would know. Sadly, the place cleared out during the previous band's set. Patrons, other band members, and even the competition hosts left before we even started. Yep, it was basically a dress rehearsal for Seven Soul. A really, really successful dress rehearsal. :-)

Regardless, Seven Soul did what we came to do... we kicked ass and fulfilled our obligation. Done.

So, that leaves only one question... did we win? We certainly hope so! But, sadly, we don't know yet. The organizers will tally up the final votes and announce the winner soon.

Until then, keep those fingers crossed!Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/21102192013-11-25T12:49:36-06:002017-01-15T15:36:38-06:0011.22.2013: Blues Bar... or FLUes Bar?Seven Soul braved the Friday traffic and frigid night air to play our very first show at Blues Bar (Mount Prospect). What a nice little place with a rockin stage! Although the blustery cold intimidated a lot of people into hibernating for the evening, we did see some familiar faces in the crowd. Maybe the most noteable face was a charter member of Seven Soul... our original drummer, Pete Sorrano (affectionately known to us as "rePete"). Great to see you, buddy!

Now, I wish I could say that we were unbelieveably awesome, but I won't lie... we had struggles. The most noteable struggle is that one of our illustrious singers, Kristen, has been stricken with the flu! BOO! For those who may not know, singing and the flu do not like each other. In fact, they're mortal enemies. But, the show must go on, and Kristen fought valiantly. She got most of her songs out there for the Blues Bar patrons, definitely earning her "Trooper" patch for the night!

And, even if this wasn't our best, we still gained new fans. The verdict is that they love the mix of music and our trademark harmonies, and they'll be back for more!

So, be sure to send warm chicken soup and healing vibes in Kristen's direction, and check out the calendar for upcoming shows (like Battle Mania coming up Nov. 30!).

Be well, SoulMates.
Seven Soultag:sevensoulchicago.com,2005:Post/20656332013-11-18T00:11:11-06:002017-01-15T15:36:38-06:0011.16.2013: Bungle in the Bungalow Joe'sKicking off our steady stream of shows to round out 2013, Seven Soul played a full night to a welcoming crowd in Hanover Park. We'll let you decide what that means!

Regardless, that ever-present energy was still with us, and we continued feeling all the feels through the night. We had several band pals come check us out for the first time. We played in the Shoeshine Boy Productions Halloween Extravaganza, sharing a stage with Todd Hembrook & The Hemispheres, Jimi Falls, and GirlBand. In the end, it just doesn't get better than costumes and the crowd chanting, "One more song! One more song!" Well, unless you count the next night, when we played another Halloween party at H.B. Fun! Well, not everyone was a stranger... a few friends and co-workers showed up, and Alisa did make a few new friends between sets (Johnny Mac, this one's for you!). But, it was great to see how many people enjoyed our sets. Looks like we're on to something here!

So, a few highlights from the evening... we added 6 new songs, and (mostly) remembered all of the words and notes. As happy as I am to report that we had NO dead arms, we traded that for a bit of dead air. I'm not sure any of us was immune. LOL! That's OK, the crowd didn't seem to mind, and they still sang along. They even busted a few moves on the dance floor!

Another highlight is we already booked our next show at J&D's before we even finished the first one. Not only did Kristen sing her tushy off belting out Janis's iconic words, but the whole room was more than happy to raise the roof by blasting "BREAK IT!" or "TAKE IT!" on cue. Well done, SoulMates!

So, will this last dose of Seven Soul keep our DeMito's crowd satisfied, or only wanting for more? Only time will tell...

She's only been asking him to play it for about, oh... twenty years now? Another highlight was our show closer, "Proud Mary." Jen Usellis led the other girls in a rendition that had the crowd on their feet and (figuratively) rollin' down that soulful river with us!
